Move over Ipad, Dell, Toshiba and HP; India comes up with yet another winner. After ADAM, India has unveiled a device which could create a will for sure create a stir in the tablet market.
India’s Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal recently showcased a $35 tablet, the invention of the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science. The tablet beats the price of MIT’s One Laptop Per Child Program.
The tablet is Linux-based prototype, enables Internet browsing, word processing, and video conferencing. It also has a 2GB memory, USB ports and wifi. For the memory, the tablet uses memory card. An interesting thing to note, the tablet can even be converted to run on solar power (at an extra cost).
The ministry has predicted that the prices of the device could drop upto $20 or $10 per unit. The development of this tablet is part of a larger initiative aimed at improving India’s educational system through technology. Nearly 8,500 colleges in the country have already gotten broadband connectivity, according to the Ministry for HRD, and some 500 Web-based and video courses are available for upload on YouTube and other online portals, with more in the works.
