Movie Review: We Are Family

You expect a good outing when you have Karan Johar leading a movie with stars like Kajol, Kareena & and Arjun Rampal. The icing on the cake being that the movie is an adaptation of a hugely successful Hollywood movie – Stepmom with of course the extra dose of emotions to lure the Indian audiences. We are family is a decent movie which will find acceptance with, as the name says, the family junta!

Maya [Kajol] is a perfect mother and her life is centred around her three kids. She is divorced from her husband Aman [Arjun Rampal] but has still made sure that they meet their dad often and don’t miss him. After 3 years of divorce, Aman introduces his girlfriend, Shreya [Kareena Kapoor] to Maya and his kids; the situation takes an unexpected turn. However, Maya is diagnosed with a terminal illness and circumstances bring the two women under the same roof.

One expects the story to be serious all along but ‘We Are Family’ has the right mix of light and serious moments. Director Siddharth P. Malhotra has handled a difficult subject really well. Some scenes between Kajol and Kareena especially where they exchange glares are noteworthy.

The music mostly comprises of slow numbers with the exception of Let’s Rock. Overall, the music is decent with Rehemo Karam, Humesha Forever and Let’s Rock the best of the lot.

The movie gives ample scope to Kajol and Kareena to show why they are in the top league and they don’t disappoint. Kajol takes the lead with a superb performance [well, she always does, doesn’t she?] but Kareena doesn’t stay far behind and delivers a wonderful performance. Arjun continues to improve with each movie – he has come a long way from Don to We are Family. The casting of the three kids is perfect.

Final word, WE ARE FAMILY is a perfect film for families since it comes with good mix of serious and light moments. We could see a lot of ‘women’ [especially the aunties] running into the theaters to watch this one!

Rating – 3/5
