Movie Review: Yeh Saali Zindagi

"review yeh saali zindagi"Sudhir Mishra is back, the director who gave us films like Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi is back in form with Yeh Saali Zindagi, a thorough entertainer, minus the baggage of superstars and blitzkrieg marketing.  You expect a decent outing when you enter the theatre but what you get is an extremely engrossing tale of diverse personalities thrown into unusual situations.

Here’s a brief into the story – Arun [Irrfan Khan] is in love with Priti and can do anything for here. She gets into a problem and to save her he first needs to save the man Priti loves, Shyam [Vipul Gupta], the to be son-in-law of a Minister. On the other hand, Kuldeep [Arunoday Singh], a young gangster wants to quit the underworld and live with his beautiful wife [Aditi Rao Hydari] and child. To do that, he needs money and so agrees to do a last job for his boss.  Add to that a whole lot of super characters and confusing situations and you have a roller coaster ride.

Sudhir Mishra has developed a really tight screenplay and coupled with supreme direction, it ensures that all the stories are linked to each other. The drama unfolds at a fast pace and add to that some abuses that come up at really funny times. The only place where the movie becomes ‘filmy’ is the ‘bullet scene’ which would’ve worked in comedy movies but that can be excused after the experience the movie gives you in the 2 hours.

The movie is full of some superb artists and they don’t disappoint. Irfan Khan leads the pack with a stellar performance. Arunoday does a great job portraying the young gangster fighting between his work and his personal life. Chitrangda looks great and performs equally well. I’m sure we will see her in more mainstream movies now.. Saurabh Shukla is great as usual. Aditi Rao Hydari is very good. Sushant Singh is perfect as the corrupt police officer while Yashpal Sharma and Prashant Narayanan are superb.

Overall, Yeh Saali Zindagi is one of the most entertaining movies to have come out in the last few months. The story is gripping, the performances are super and the abuses just add to the zing!
