Dissatisfied with Facebook, especially the changes in the privacy policy, several users have come together in an effort to organize a mass BYE BYE FACEBOOK campaign and guess what, they are using social networks to do it. Their site, QuitFacebookDay.com, asks users to delete their Facebook accounts on May 31 by signing their name or Twitter handle to the list of pledges.
The main cause of this has been Facebook’s changes in its privacy policy (which is, hold your breath, 5,830 words long, even more than the Constitution of the United States which reads at 4,543 words) and the its current platform which, by default, gives third-party companies access to members’ names, friend lists and hobbies has triggered the hate even more. When a member logs onto a partner site, the content displayed is shaped by their own interests, as well as the activities of their Facebook friends. To disable this feature, a manual opt-out is required.
Google Canada has reported that the top online search related to “Facebook account” is “delete Facebook,” while the fastest-rising related query is “deactivate Facebook account,” up 40 per cent over the past 90 days. Worldwide, the search engine’s results on Facebook account deletion ballooned from 15.9 million to 19.5 million between May 11 and 13 alone. There are 400 million members in total.
Let’s wait and watch what happens on May 31!

I have read about FB and their privacy policy in numerous blogs across blog world. I think FB needs to something about it quite fast if it wants to keep its membership up…I have planned to remove all my pictures from my FB account and maybe I might just quit one day too…

Didnt we all see this coming..as a SNS becomes popular there is a huge risk of it getting commercialized and this is where the purpose of a SNS gets defeated…:-(

I have never registered and will never be a part of FB. People need to get a life and start working. Who the hell has all this time to surf FB?

@Priyanka – Yes, agree with you
@Abha – So am I…and expect to be in future as well because FB is changing its settings
@Joe – A lot of peple have the time to spend on facebook. the best thing about it is that you are able to connect back with friends you never expected to see again in your life…So that’s one of the biggest plus points of social networking websites

I honestly dont get the fuss behind it. Facebook was always a very public place. I mean if you are that bothered about ur pics not being misused take them off. Quitting facebook is not the solution. Like Prubha said, my life depends on it too.

@Tavish – I agree with you…even I can’t live without it :). A couple of reasons why this issue has become huge is because… people want to connect with people ‘THEY’ want to…they want to show their pictures to ‘SELECTED’ people and not everyone and people might want to have private profiles with selected people on your list….Facebook has done some brand damage with regular changes in privacy settings, which more often than not have been for FB’s good and not the users!

@Mohan – The news is that the response that this initiative has only got 34,000 users had vowed to quit. But there is a difference between vowing to quit and actually quitting…(source -mashable)
